MUTARE – The Officer Commanding Police Manicaland Province Sports Gala roared to life last week at ZRP Mutare Main Camp, with police officers from across the province showcasing their athletic ability, teamwork and competitive spirit in various sporting disciplines.
The annual event, hosted under the leadership of Officer Commanding Police Manicaland Province, Commissioner Charles Nhete, brought together officers from different districts to compete in a series of sporting activities aimed at promoting physical fitness, discipline and unity within the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
Speaking at the official opening of the gala, Commissioner Nhete underscored the importance of sport in policing, saying physical fitness remains a critical component of effective law enforcement.
“Sport is not just about winning medals or trophies. It promotes physical fitness, mental wellness, discipline and teamwork, which are qualities every police officer must possess. A healthy and fit officer is better equipped to serve and protect the public professionally,” said Commissioner Nhete.
He urged officers to compete in the true spirit of sportsmanship while strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation among members of the force.
“As you compete today, remember that the ultimate goal is to build unity, identify talent and encourage healthy living. Let us compete fairly, respect one another and continue to uphold the values of the Zimbabwe Republic Police,” he said.
Teams competed in various disciplines throughout the day, with participants demonstrating determination and resilience in closely contested matches. The competition also served as a platform to identify talented athletes who will represent Manicaland Province at national Zimbabwe Republic Police sporting competitions.
The event attracted enthusiastic support from fellow officers and senior commanders, creating a lively atmosphere at the Mutare Main Camp sports grounds.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police regularly stages provincial sports galas as part of its wellness and talent development programme, recognising that physical fitness plays a vital role in enhancing operational readiness, improving officers’ health and fostering teamwork across the organisation.
Outstanding performers from the Manicaland Sports Gala are expected to be selected to represent the province at forthcoming national police sporting championships.
