MUTARE, 23 January 2026 – The father of the three-month-old baby girl who died mysteriously in Chikanga Phase 2, Chikomo, yesterday has broken his silence, saying he is “finished” and vowing to seek justice for his daughter.
Njowera, the bereaved father, was seen weeping uncontrollably as he recalled the last moments he spent with his infant daughter. He told The Wasu Post that he had been playing with the baby around 3 PM on the day she died and had bought her yoghurt.
“I am finished,” a distraught Njowera said, his voice breaking. “I was playing with her around 3 PM. I bought her yoghurt.”
The grieving father was too overcome with emotion to provide finer details of the incident, as he broke down repeatedly during the interview. However, he made it clear that he would not rest until justice was served for his child.
“I will bring justice for my baby,” he vowed.
In an extensive interview with this publication, Stembile Dhliwayo (45years), the neighbor who was caring for the infant at the time of her death, maintained her innocence and provided a detailed account of the events leading up to the tragedy.
Dhliwayo, who lives next door to the baby’s family, said she had known the family for years and had often carried the child.
“When I took the child, I had no bad intention at all. I used to carry the deceased and at times go to her home with the baby,” Dhliwayo said.
She emphasized her long-standing relationship with the family, stating, “I even saw the deceased’s mother growing up. There is no way I can do bad to the family.”
Dhliwayo explained that on the day of the incident, the baby’s mother had given her $5 to buy 2kg of rice from a nearby shop, commonly known as the “blue shop.”
“I was given $5 to buy rice, and the change was supposed to be used to buy a pair of socks, ” she said.
The 45-year-old insisted she was simply running an errand for the mother and that nothing untoward had occurred during her time with the infant.
Investigations are in progress, police interview both Dhliwayo and the grieving family as part of their inquiries. No arrests have been made at this stage.
The baby’s body has been taken to a local mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
