ZIMBABWEAN climate governance advocate Nyasha Frank Mpahlo has landed a major global climate award worth US$4 million, with the funding set to support efforts to connect African innovators and scale up locally developed energy solutions.
Mpahlo, the executive director of Green Governance Zimbabwe (GGZ), was named one of four 2026 Climate Breakthrough Awardees on September 15.
Each awardee will receive US$4 million in multiyear, flexible and non-directive funding.
According to GGZ, the award will enable Mpahlo to develop an initiative aimed at helping African innovators overcome barriers that have kept promising home-grown energy solutions from reaching wider markets.
“The initiative addresses a practical challenge: locally developed energy solutions may show promise but still face barriers to connection, support and wider adoption,” GGZ said.
The organisation said the initiative would focus on building an ecosystem around African innovators rather than simply promoting individual technologies.
At the centre of the initiative is the proposed Energy+ Innovators Platform, which is intended to connect innovators and home-grown solutions across electricity, water, food systems, agriculture, transport, health and renewable energy.
GGZ said: “A central element is the proposed Energy+ Innovators Platform, intended to connect innovators and home-grown solutions across areas including electricity, water, food systems, agriculture, transport, health and renewable energy.”
The award comes as Africa continues to face a major energy access challenge.
Climate Breakthrough estimates that about 600 million people in Africa lack access to electricity, while roughly one billion continue to cook with polluting fuels.
For Zimbabwe, GGZ said the recognition connects local experience in climate governance and community participation to wider continental debates on energy access, innovation and accountability.

Mpahlo has more than 14 years of experience in research, policy influencing, climate governance, transparency and accountability.
Under his leadership, GGZ has worked on climate governance, climate finance, just energy transition, natural-resource governance, youth participation, climate resilience and policy advocacy.
The organisation said Mpahlo has also advocated for an energy transition that goes beyond infrastructure.
“Mpahlo has also advocated for an energy transition that considers not only infrastructure, but also ownership, governance, accountability and community benefit,” GGZ said.
However, GGZ cautioned that the proposed initiative is still at an early stage and should not be mistaken for an already operational continental platform.
“The initiative is at a development stage,” GGZ said, adding that the award “should not be read as evidence that the proposed platform is already operating at continental scale or that future outcomes have already been achieved.”
GGZ said the award provides Mpahlo with an opportunity to take the initiative into its next phase while strengthening connections among African innovators and locally led energy solutions.
