Chikanga, 23 October 2025 – Chikanga Secondary School in Mutare is on course to be upgraded into a high school offering Advanced Level classes following major infrastructure developments funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) under Chikanga legislator Hon. Lynnet Karenyi.
A new science laboratory, installed by Lab Legends, has been completed at the school — a key requirement for institutions seeking ‘A’ Level status. The development comes as the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education confirmed that the school has met most of the criteria needed for the upgrade.
Responding to a question from Hon. Karenyi in Parliament, Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Hon. Angeline Gata, said the Ministry had already assessed Chikanga Secondary and advised it to apply for ‘A’ Level status.
“The provincial team was at the school last week to assess and discuss the modalities of the ‘A’ Level status. The school has established infrastructure that meets the Ministry’s requirements, including a science laboratory and lecture theatre,” said Hon. Gata.
She added that with the construction of an additional classroom block and improved sanitation facilities, there is “no way in which the school can fail to acquire an ‘A’ Level status.”
Chikanga Secondary School is expected to start enrolling Advanced Level pupils in all learning areas by 2026.
Hon. Karenyi’s initiative to channel CDF funds towards improving education infrastructure in her constituency has been widely praised by residents, who say the upgrade will save local learners from travelling long distances to other schools offering A-Level studies.
The Ministry said it will continue assessing other secondary schools across the country to ensure more institutions are upgraded to Advanced Level status in line with national education access goals.
