{"id":541,"date":"2025-06-08T12:07:58","date_gmt":"2025-06-08T12:07:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thewasupost.co.zw\/?p=541"},"modified":"2025-06-08T12:07:58","modified_gmt":"2025-06-08T12:07:58","slug":"united-against-plastic-pollution-ema-leads-clean-up-campaign-in-penhalonga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewasupost.co.zw\/index.php\/2025\/06\/08\/united-against-plastic-pollution-ema-leads-clean-up-campaign-in-penhalonga\/","title":{"rendered":"UNITED AGAINST PLASTIC POLLUTION: EMA LEADS CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGN IN PENHALONGA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Fanuel Chinowaita<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" data-id=\"544\" src=\"https:\/\/thewasupost.co.zw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/FB_IMG_17492735629421797-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thewasupost.co.zw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/FB_IMG_17492735629421797-1.jpg 720w, https:\/\/thewasupost.co.zw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/FB_IMG_17492735629421797-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thewasupost.co.zw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/FB_IMG_17492735629421797-1-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PENHALONGA, MUTASA \u2013 June 8, 2025<\/strong> \u2013 The national clean-up campaign held Friday at Penhalonga Service Centre brought together key stakeholders in a spirited fight against plastic pollution, in alignment with Zimbabwe\u2019s environmental commitments and preparations for hosting COP15 next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event, held under the theme <em>\u201cUniting Against Plastic Pollution: Protecting Wetlands for Future Generations,\u201d<\/em> coincided with World Environment Day commemorations and saw participation from the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), the Manicaland Provincial leadership, mining companies, youth groups, people with disabilities, and local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing the gathering, Rosina Mugadza, EMA Matron for Manicaland Province and wife to Manicaland State Minister Misheck Mugadza emphasized the urgency of combating plastic waste, which she described as \u201ca growing threat to wetlands, biodiversity, and public health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cPlastic pollution threatens human health, aquatic species, tourism and contributes to climate change,\u201d she said. \u201cZimbabwe\u2019s wetlands are vital to water security, agriculture and biodiversity and they are under threat.\u201d<br>She called for strengthened local authority systems and infrastructure to manage plastic waste and urged communities to adopt environmentally friendly alternatives such as baskets and eco-bags.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Mugadza also highlighted Zimbabwe\u2019s hosting of the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Ramsar Convention in July 2025, saying it was a critical moment to showcase the nation\u2019s commitment to sustainable environmental management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was part of the ongoing <em>First Friday of the Month National Clean-Up Campaign,<\/em> launched by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2018. EMA officials present reiterated the importance of observing the presidential directive and fostering environmental stewardship at grassroots level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking during the campaign, Clinton T. Masanga, Director of the Penhalonga Youth Development Trust, urged stronger community-mining partnerships for environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cPenhalonga has been devastated by illegal mining,\u201d said Masanga. \u201cToday\u2019s clean-up shows that collaboration between youth, mining companies, and the local authority can pave the way for accountability and lasting change.\u201d<br>Mining company Better Brands, one of the main stakeholders in the campaign, also expressed its commitment to environmental health.
