{"id":2655,"date":"2026-09-01T19:13:33","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T19:13:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thewasupost.co.zw\/?p=2655"},"modified":"2026-09-01T19:13:33","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T19:13:33","slug":"mutasa-power-vandal-jailed-20-years-after-citizens-arrest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewasupost.co.zw\/index.php\/2026\/09\/01\/mutasa-power-vandal-jailed-20-years-after-citizens-arrest\/","title":{"rendered":"Mutasa Power Vandal Jailed 20 Years After Citizen\u2019s Arrest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Fanuel Chinowaita<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>MUTASA, Zimbabwe<\/strong> \u2014 A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to <strong>20 years in prison<\/strong> after being convicted of vandalizing electricity infrastructure in Mutasa, eastern Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Innocent Mwadini<\/strong>, of Chirindo Village, was arrested on August 7 after an alert resident reportedly caught him tampering with a transformer following a sudden power outage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mwadini fled when he was discovered, but the resident chased him and effected a citizen\u2019s arrest before handing him over to the authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Manicaland Acting Spokesperson <strong>Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka<\/strong> confirmed the conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police said investigations by the CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit in Mutare established that Mwadini had cut a <strong>70mm, four-core armoured cable<\/strong> connected to a <strong>12KV transformer<\/strong> supplying electricity to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators also uncovered a second case in which another transformer had been vandalised and its copper cables and windings stolen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mwadini appeared before <strong>Mutasa Magistrates Court on August 28<\/strong>, where Magistrate Fungai Muringi presided over the case and Tinotenda Muzondo represented the State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was sentenced to <strong>10 years for each count<\/strong>, resulting in a combined 20-year prison term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police hailed the resident&#8217;s intervention, saying the arrest demonstrated the importance of community vigilance in protecting critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The force warned that electricity infrastructure vandalism has consequences far beyond damaged equipment, disrupting power supplies to households and businesses and affecting essential services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police urged communities to report suspected vandalism, theft and tampering with electricity infrastructure, describing public cooperation as critical to protecting infrastructure and supporting national economic activity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Fanuel Chinowaita MUTASA, Zimbabwe \u2014 A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of vandalizing electricity infrastructure in Mutasa, eastern Zimbabwe.
