{"id":259,"date":"2025-02-11T02:32:07","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T02:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thewasupost.co.zw\/?p=259"},"modified":"2025-02-11T02:32:07","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T02:32:07","slug":"mutare-faces-flooding-crisis-amidst-concerns-over-environmental-degradation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewasupost.co.zw\/index.php\/2025\/02\/11\/mutare-faces-flooding-crisis-amidst-concerns-over-environmental-degradation\/","title":{"rendered":"Mutare Faces Flooding Crisis Amidst Concerns Over Environmental Degradation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Fanuel Chinowaita<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MUTARE \u2013<\/strong> A dispute has erupted between the Mutare City Council and environmental watchdog Mutare Rivers Rehabilitation Initiative (MRRI) over the city&#8217;s ongoing flooding crisis, with MRRI accusing authorities of negligence in protecting key ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The clash surfaced in a heated exchange yesterday after the council attributed the flooding to uncontrolled cultivation on the city\u2019s mountainous areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe major cause of this is cultivation that is being practised in mountains, and we continue to urge our residents to stop these unsustainable practices that are causing land degradation,\u201d the City of Mutare said in a statement, adding that it was working to resuscitate its Ranging Unit to monitor illegal activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, MRRI\u2019s Lynne James strongly criticized the city\u2019s response, arguing that authorities had ignored repeated warnings about the destruction of waterways and wetlands over the past three and a half years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn three and a half years, absolutely <em>no action<\/em> has been taken to curb the rampant cultivation and deforestation of our mountains and wetlands by responsible authorities, despite the fact that you <em>hold the law in your hands,<\/em>\u201d James said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She further accused the council of contributing to the problem by approving developments that threaten wetlands, which act as natural flood buffers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd COM itself has applied for a change of land use on one of the <em>last intact wetlands<\/em> for a 23-unit housing development! Wetlands mitigate the effects of flooding! They slow the waters, they absorb the waters.
