Harare, 26 March 2026<\/strong> \u2014 The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced a comprehensive security clampdown effective immediately, warning motorists, unlicensed liquor outlets and drug peddlers of intensified operations as the nation prepares for the Easter and 46th Independence Day holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement released yesterday, Commissioner-General S. Mutamba ordered all Police Provinces to establish comprehensive security arrangements for gatherings at national, provincial, and district levels. The police chief urged parents and guardians to prioritize the safety of learners as schools close for the term, specifically warning against the abuse and exploitation of children, particularly regarding drug and substance abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe ZRP is taking decisive action on drug and substance abuse peddlers. I urge Zimbabweans to report anyone trafficking or peddling drugs at any nearest Police Station,\u201d Mutamba said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The police force announced that it will be on high alert throughout the holiday period, conducting roadblocks, stop-and-search blitzed and patrols to maintain law and order. Authorities issued a stern warning to motorists, stating that the ongoing operation targeting plateless vehicles, vehicles unlawfully fitted with beacon lights, blue lights and other dangerous fittings will be intensified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe use of unregistered vehicles, including those without number plates, will not be allowed by the Police,\u201d read the statement. Drivers were warned against overloading, speeding, dangerous overtaking and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The public was warned against boarding pirate taxis, commonly known as \u201cmushikashika,\u201d which the police said expose commuters to risks of accidents and robbery. The recently re-launched National Highway Patrol has been directed to take stern action against unruly driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a move targeting violent crime, the ZRP announced targeted operations to shut down shebeens and unlicensed liquor outlets under the Liquor Act [Chapter 14:12], citing that such establishments often fuel violent crimes and public disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commissioner-General Mutamba issued a direct warning to criminal syndicates, particularly armed robbery gangs targeting law enforcement officers, stating that any attack on police officers or resistance to lawful arrest \u201cwill face the appropriate response and lawful force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The public has been urged to secure homes, livestock and valuables and to avoid carrying large sums of money to curtail robbery cases. Suspicious activities can be reported to the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
