Mutare to Host Under-9 Football Tournament

Mutare — Mutare’s grassroots football revival gathers pace on February 28 when a 12-team Under-9 tournament takes centre stage at Chisamba Grounds, in an initiative aimed at nurturing young talent and rebuilding the city’s junior football structures.

The competition, organised by the Sebbo Mapara & Friends Foundation, will run from 8am until late and is expected to draw young footballers from across Mutare and surrounding communities.

The foundation is spearheaded by UK-based former footballer Takunda Sebbo Mapara, who previously featured for Highlanders F.C. and Tenax CS FC.

He works alongside directors Freddy Mudzingwa and Douglas Mutsotso. Mapara said the initiative is firmly focused on rebuilding football from the base.

“I was raised by football; my life has always revolved around the game. I felt I owed football a token of appreciation, and that is why I engaged my friends to form this foundation,” Mapara said.

He noted that the Under-9 age group has long been neglected in Mutare, creating a critical developmental gap in the local football pipeline. Through the tournament, organisers hope to identify talent early while instilling values that extend beyond the pitch.

Beyond competition, the event will include life-skills sessions centred on education, discipline, dedication and anti-drug abuse awareness—an issue Mapara said is increasingly affecting young people.

The tournament also carries emotional significance. Last year’s edition was held in honour of the late talented goalkeeper Simbarashe Chigova Nkosi, whose passing deeply affected the local football fraternity.

Twelve teams are set to battle for honours, including La Sakubva, Young United Zimunya, SAFA, Reactors, Sakubva United, City Veloes, Chikanga United, Eastern Jewels Academy and Majesa Academy, among others.

Outstanding performers will be rewarded with school fees vouchers and individual accolades, while participating clubs are expected to benefit from football equipment support—a move organisers say is designed to ensure sustainability beyond match day.
