Mutare, 22 January 2026– A fatal hit-and-run incident near Matanda Shopping Centre on the Mutare-Marange Highway has claimed the life of 57-year-old Oneday Masibhera. The collision occurred this past Sunday under circumstances now under police investigation.

While authorities have not issued an official comment, The West Post has confirmed that police are aware of the incident and that investigations are ongoing.

Accounts provided to The West Post by close sources, relatives of the deceased and motorists paint a chaotic picture.

According to these sources, the driver of a Probox fled the scene after allegedly striking Masibhera. It is further alleged that both the pedestrian and the Probox driver were intoxicated.

The incident appears to have been precipitated by a separate minor accident at Matanda Shopping Centre, where the same Probox allegedly scratched another vehicle. The Probox driver then reportedly fled that scene, prompting a chase by the owner of the scratched car.

During this pursuit, a pickup truck was positioned between the two vehicles. Sources state the pickup driver witnessed the Probox strike Masibhera but did not stop. Both the pickup driver and the pursuing motorist stopped at the location where Masibhera was hit.

The alleged owner of the Probox has been approached but has so far refused to cooperate, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Police continue to investigate the sequence of events leading to the fatal collision.
