Zero Airtime? NetOne Lets You Call Anyway

By Fanuel Chinowaita

Harare, 10 January 2026– State-owned mobile network operator NetOne has introduced a Reverse Calling service, also known as “Pay for Me”, allowing subscribers to make calls even when they have zero airtime, in a move the company says is aimed at keeping Zimbabweans connected during tough economic times.

The service enables a subscriber without airtime to initiate a call, with the receiving party given the option to accept and pay for the call or decline it at no cost. If the call is accepted, it proceeds normally and the receiver is billed; if declined, no charges are incurred by either party.

NetOne said the service responds to everyday challenges faced by many Zimbabweans who miss important calls due to lack of airtime, including students needing to contact family, job seekers following up on opportunities, vendors confirming deliveries, or travellers seeking assistance in emergencies.

“This service exists because money is tight, but communication is essential,” NetOne said in a statement. “An emergency does not wait for payday, and opportunities do not wait until someone tops up.”

According to the mobile operator, Reverse Calling is designed to be simple, transparent and user-controlled, with the receiving customer always informed before accepting responsibility for the call charges.

NetOne said the introduction of the service is part of its broader effort to ensure communication remains accessible, particularly in a strained economic environment where disposable income for airtime is limited.

“In tough economic times, small solutions make a big difference,” the company said, adding that Reverse Calling is meant to reduce reliance on missed calls and “please call me” messages by enabling direct communication when it matters most.

The service is now available to NetOne subscribers nationwide.
