Telecel Workers Unpaid for Five Months as Company Begins Contract Terminations

Mutare, 8 December 2025 – Telecel Zimbabwe workers in Mutare say they have gone for more than five months without salaries, amid growing fear after the company started terminating contracts as part of what it says is a restructuring process.

A termination letter dated 24 November 2025, seen by The Wasu Post, confirms that Telecel Zimbabwe has begun ending employment contracts due to “restructuring” currently underway within the company. The letter, addressed to one employee, states that the contract will end on 30 November 2025, adding that outstanding dues would be paid “in line with labour laws”.

However, affected workers insist they have not received their outstanding salaries, including those whose contracts were terminated.

Employees say the non-payment has forced some to stop reporting for duty, citing financial hardship and uncertainty over their employment future. One terminated employee told The Wasu Post that he has not been paid for five months.

“I am still waiting for my money. I am the breadwinner at home, so five months without a salary is heartbreaking,” he said.

Workers who spoke to this publication also claimed they were ordered in October to start signing one-month employment contracts, before some were later terminated in November. The sudden shift from longer-term arrangements has fuelled speculation about possible downsizing.

Employees had previously been told their outstanding salaries would be settled by 30 November 2025, but the deadline passed without payment, worsening frustration among staff.

The developments have sparked questions about Telecel’s handling of employee welfare at a time the telecommunications company has already been struggling with operational and ownership challenges.

Efforts to obtain official comment from Telecel Zimbabwe were unsuccessful at the time of publication. Meanwhile, the number of unpaid workers is growing, and staff members say they remain in limbo as uncertainty continues over when, or if, the arrears will be cleared.
