MUTARE – The second edition of the Pacific Storm Soccer Tournament kicked off yesterday at Chinyausunzi Groundin Sakubva Mutare, drawing nine teams grouped into three pools in what turned out to be a spirited and discipline-filled competition.
In Group 1, Rozvi emerged dominant, collecting six points after back-to-back 1–0 victories over Cairns and Tapitapi. Tapitapi followed with four points, edging Cairns in a penalty shootout to secure second place.
Group 2 saw City of Mutare finishing top with four points, while Chipolopolo trailed with three and Club Zimbo ended at the bottom with a single point.
Group 3 produced a tight contest as All Stars and Quarry FC both tallied four points, but All Stars clinched the group on goal difference. Ghetto Stars exited the tournament without registering a point.
Tournament organisers praised both the competitive edge and the sportsmanship displayed throughout the day.
“We have started our tournament and we are hoping to ignite soccer from the grassroots level,” said Kuda Chiutsi, Pacific Storm Marketing Manager.
Organiser Michael Muchana echoed the appreciation, noting the smooth running of the event. “Many thanks to the sponsor, Pacific Storm, for the 2025 and second edition of the boozers tournament in Mutare. It started peacefully and ended the same way. No injuries or violence were reported, and all teams maintained a high level of discipline. We now shift focus to the round of six which will be played in October. Congratulations to the teams that progressed and tough luck to those that went for an early shower,” he said.
Another organiser, Frank Bhunu, described the edition as “thrilling,” highlighting the electrifying atmosphere and strong community turnout. “The Pacific is not just a brand but a catalyst for uplifting communities through sport. Even in stadiums like Michele and Vhengere in Rusape, they are uplifting facilities. We are very happy for this partnership,” he said.
Godwin Sithole also applauded the sponsor for bringing joy to local communities, stressing that the tournament promotes peace, unity and excitement in Mutare’s football landscape.
The tournament will now move into the round of six, with group winners and runners-up facing off in October. The top two teams will qualify for the grand finals set for Harare in December.
