CHIMANIMANI – Farmers in Chimanimani were yesterday encouraged to embrace agroecology and traditional farming practices as pathways to sustainable agriculture during a talk show hosted by Poret Trust.

The event, which brought together agricultural experts, community leaders, and farmers, focused on solutions to farming challenges, the importance of good seed, and environmental sustainability.

Agriculture business advisor Mrs. Gloria Mafukidze told participants that Africa’s strength lies in its cultural diversity but warned against overreliance on supermarkets.
“As Africans, we have diversity in our culture of doing things. People don’t want to work but prefer to buy things in supermarkets,” she said, adding that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) place emphasis on environmental sustainability.

Home farming project owner Evelyn Chatanga underscored the benefits of agroecology, encouraging farmers to avoid synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, improve soil management, and promote biodiversity.
“Agroecology not only sustains agriculture but also enhances health management through safe and natural methods,” she said.

Dr. Mujaju, Director in the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted the need to reclaim African ways of living and the significance of traditional medicine.
“The legacy of colonialism has had a lasting impact on African cultures and systems, and it is time to rebuild from within,” he said.

Renowned broadcaster Dr. Amai Chisamba, who also attended the event, expressed her enthusiasm in educating farmers on how to achieve good and healthy yields.

Poret Trust Manager Mr. Blessing Matondo said the program would give farmers in Chimanimani an opportunity to learn, share grievances, and improve their livelihoods. He also announced the opening of a market at Nedziva, where farmers can sell seeds and other produce to boost local economic growth.

“This platform will not only benefit farmers through education but also empower them economically,” Matondo said.
