MUTARE – A 19-year-old teenager from Sakubva, Blessed Zimunya, is receiving urgent medical care for a cancer-related hand condition, thanks to efforts by local residents and the Dave Munos Foundation.
Blessed was diagnosed with cancer at three months old at Parirenyatwa Hospital. His mother, Tsitsi Mahomwa, said the condition began as a small growth and has worsened over the years.
“It started as a small lump when he was still a baby. Now it has grown so big that it’s affecting his whole hand,” she said. “We couldn’t afford treatment, and it has been very painful to watch my son suffer.”
Mahomwa, who lost her husband three months ago, has been caring for Blessed alone. She said despite his deteriorating condition, her son remains determined to continue his education. “He is in Form Four. Even with everything going on, he still wants to finish school,” she added.
When residents of Zororai Old People’s Home learned of Blessed’s condition, they mobilized what little they had to get him admitted at Mutare General Hospital.
The Dave Munos Foundation later stepped in and transferred him to private specialist care under Dr. Mhlanga. He is currently admitted at the doctor’s facility, with all medical costs being covered.
“We couldn’t ignore his condition,” said Donald Manhende, Chairman of the Dave Munos Foundation. “When we first approached him, he ran away because he was afraid of losing his hand. But when he came back, the situation worsened and he has to be admitted at Mutare General Hospital, We had to act fast.”
Manhende said the foundation has taken full responsibility for Zimunya’s care. “Our goal is to restore hope. We are committed to making sure Blessed gets the treatment he needs, and we’ll be with him throughout this journey.
“Discovery Ambulance Services, a sister company to the foundation, is providing free ambulance transport and medical logistics to support the young man’s treatment.”
Residents in Mutare have applauded the coordinated effort and are urging other organizations to assist vulnerable community members.
