Authorities have issued a high-alert warning for residents in Feruka and Dora areas following the discovery of fresh leopard spoor within the vicinity on Tuesday.
The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has confirmed the presence of the predator near the border of Feruka and Dora communal lands.
According to a report by Feruka security personnel, the leopard spoor was detected during routine patrols on Monday morning. A team dispatched for further assessment verified the tracks, raising concerns for the safety of both humans and livestock in the region.
Dr. Mashava J., Community Liaison Officer, urged the communities to take necessary precautions to minimize risks posed by the stray leopard.
“Leopards are nocturnal hunters, and as such, we strongly advise residents to pen their livestock at night, limit nighttime movements, and use clear, open paths for travel,” he said in a statement.
Residents have been urged to report any leopard sightings to local authorities, including the Mutare Rural District Council, traditional leaders, and ZimParks. Continuous monitoring of the predator’s movements is underway as plans are being formulated to safely capture and relocate the leopard.
Authorities have linked this incident to a similar report of a stray leopard along the Christmas Pass range, suggesting the animal could be the same.
Community members are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to the safety guidelines to prevent human-wildlife conflict.
