ZRP Manicaland Responds to Allegations of Police Misconduct

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Manicaland has issued a stern warning against misconduct by law enforcement officers following allegations that some police officers in Chikanga are extorting small business owners.

ZRP Acting Manicaland Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, emphasized the need for accountability within the force.

“Thank you so much. It is pertinent to note that no one is above the law. As such, any act of misconduct by any officer should be brought to the attention of the Police Command. The law will take its course against whoever is found on the wrong side,” he stated.

Chinyoka also urged the business community to ensure their operations comply with the law.

“To the business community, we say let’s regularize our businesses and ensure that we comply with the dictates of the law in terms of registration and operations.”

His remarks come in the wake of accusations that officers from the Police Intelligence and Security (PISI) department, led by Constable Wonder Muchanga, have been soliciting bribes from small business owners in areas such as Chikanga, Hobhouse, ZIMTA, Natview, and Dream House.

The officers are reportedly using a silver Ipsum vehicle to collect amounts of $5 or more from tuckshop and gas station operators without issuing receipts.

Several small business owners confirmed these allegations, with one saying, “These officers are making it difficult for us to survive. They come to our shops almost every week demanding money, regardless of how little we are making.”

Another operator said, “They don’t care if your business is registered or not. If you try to explain, they threaten to shut down your operations or confiscate your goods.”

A vendor added, “What hurts the most is that they are taking this money without issuing receipts. It feels like we are paying to protect ourselves from the very people who are supposed to protect us.”

The allegations have sparked concerns among small business operators, who now call for transparency and action to address the reported extortion.
