Mutare, Zimbabwe –22 December 2024 Mutare’s Queens Hall was filled with joy and excitement on Friday as the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund brought smiles to underprivileged members of the community. The annual event, chaired by Mr. John Torinto, highlighted generosity and a renewed commitment to extend support beyond the festive season.
In his address, Mr. Torinto emphasized the importance of evolving the initiative to address ongoing community needs.
“This time we added more items to the hampers, and we are praying that God blesses us so we can do even more,” Torinto said.
This year, the fund aimed to assist 2,000 people but managed to reach 1,000 beneficiaries—an improvement from last year’s 500. The program also donated wheelchairs and walking sticks to those with mobility challenges.
Torinto thanked African Century Bank and other stakeholders for their contributions, highlighting the importance of partnerships in sustaining the program.
Mutare Mayor Simon Chabuka echoed Torinto’s sentiments and announced a shift from the Christmas-focused initiative to a broader “Mayor’s Fund” designed to address year-round challenges.
“It’s no longer just a Christmas fund but a Mayor’s Fund because hunger is not limited to December—it’s an everyday challenge,” Chabuka said.
He urged residents to pay rates on time to help sustain such programs.
“We urge residents to pay rates on time. Some of these items were bought using those funds,” he added.
The event also brought life-changing support to individuals with disabilities. Elisher Katswa received a new wheelchair to replace his worn-out one, and Emmanuel Zvinawasha was given a walking stick to aid his mobility. Physiotherapists will assist in identifying others in need of similar support.
The Mayor hinted at plans to assist with school fees payments if residents continue supporting council initiatives.
The fund’s efforts also extended to individuals with intellectual and mental disabilities, ensuring inclusivity and support for all vulnerable groups.
The Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund continues to offer hope and proves that collective efforts can create lasting impact—not just during the festive season but throughout the year.
