MUTARE, Zimbabwe, 29 October 2016 — Reports that four female students from Mutare Teachers College (MTC) were raped near the institution’s premises have raised concerns about student safety, with questions emerging over the security of learners returning from examinations.
The alleged attack is said to have occurred last night at the college’s farm fields, where the students were reportedly assaulted by unidentified men who fled the scene.
The allegations have heightened concerns about the safety of students moving around the college premises, particularly after examinations and other academic activities that may keep them away from their residences until late.
However, details surrounding the alleged incident remain unclear and the identities of the suspected attackers have not been established.
Neither the Zimbabwe Republic Police nor college officials had commented on the reports by the time of publication, leaving key questions unanswered about the circumstances of the alleged attack and whether an investigation had been opened.
The reports have also drawn attention to the broader responsibility of educational institutions to ensure that students can access academic facilities and return to their residences safely.
Adequate lighting, security patrols and safe routes around college premises are among the measures that can help reduce students’ exposure to potential attacks.
For now, the allegations remain unverified, and further details are needed from the police and college authorities to establish what happened.
The Wasu Post will continue seeking official comment and update this report as more information becomes available.
