MUTARE – Mutare Central Constituency has completed several infrastructure projects under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), with Member of Parliament Brian James saying the investments are aimed at improving access to education, healthcare and other public services.
The largest project was the construction of a pedestrian bridge between Mutanda Primary School and Sakubva’s Chisamba Singles at a cost of about US$26,000.
Speaking to The Wasu Post last week, James said the bridge has improved connectivity for residents from Sakubva, Chikanga and Yeovil.
“The bridge was our main project. It links people from Sakubva, Chikanga and Yeovil to Sakubva High Schools 1 and 2, Mutanda Primary School, Elise Gledhill School, Mutare Teachers’ College, the Grain Marketing Board and part of the Nyakamiti Industrial Area,” he said.
James said Mutare Central received approximately US$47,000 under the Constituency Development Fund. Besides the bridge, between US$20,000 and US$21,000 was used to renovate Sakubva Maternity Hospital, while about US$500 purchased two four-seater reception benches for Fern Valley Clinic to improve seating for patients awaiting treatment.
He said a small balance remains in the constituency account to keep it operational.
Looking ahead, James said he hopes the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Local Government will consider inspecting ageing residential flats in Mutare Central when it visits the city.
“I am praying that when the Local Government Committee comes to Mutare for its tour, they will also consider Matida Flats, the Blocks and Chimolo Flats,” he said, expressing hope that the visit could draw attention to the need for improvements at the residential complexes.
James also revealed that he has engaged relevant authorities on plans to establish an arts centre in Sakubva, saying the facility would provide a platform for local artists and promote talent development within the high-density suburb.
The Constituency Development Fund is a government program that provides Members of Parliament with resources to finance community development projects identified by residents in their constituencies.
