Mutare New Start Centre Closes as USAID Withdrawal Hits Zimbabwe

By Heather Buzuzi

Mutare’s New Start Centre has shut its doors, leaving many people stranded and without access to critical health services. The closure, which occurred last week, has forced those who relied on the facility to seek assistance at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital and other city council clinics.

Efforts to obtain a comment from New Start Centre were unsuccessful, as the facility was found locked with no staff present.

The closure comes in the wake of the United States’ decision to withdraw aid to Africa, which has had a significant impact on various health and social service organizations. Family AIDS Caring Trust (FACT) Zimbabwe, a Christian-based national organization focused on health improvement and poverty reduction, has also shut down. FACT Zimbabwe has been instrumental in HIV and AIDS response efforts, working with marginalized communities across the country.

The organization has operated under core values that emphasize Transparency and Accountability, Acceptance and Inclusion, Integrity, and Love and Compassion. However, the loss of funding has left its future uncertain, potentially worsening health service delivery for vulnerable populations.

The withdrawal of U.S. aid raises concerns about Zimbabwe’s already struggling healthcare system, particularly for those dependent on donor-funded initiatives. With key institutions like FACT Zimbabwe and New Start Centre ceasing operations, many fear an increase in health crises, particularly in HIV treatment and support services.

Authorities and health stakeholders are yet to issue a response on how they plan to mitigate the impact of these closures.
